Saint Timothy Newswire: Doon Pioneer Park Community Centre (DPPCA) Christmas Miracle Food Hamper Project

The time has come to let the community know that the 2022 Christmas Miracle Food Hamper Project is a go for this year!

The last 2 years had been challenging due to the COVID-19 uncertainties, but one thing is guaranteed — we cannot cancel Christmas. The committee has been busy planning and getting things ready for this yearly event. This will be another challenging year due to the post-effect of COVID-19 to the economy, thus affecting each, and every one of us in our community.

The annual Christmas Miracle Food Hamper Project was started in 1982 by Florence Carbray (who sadly passed in early 2020). This is her legacy – to bring the community together as one. Since then, this project has significantly grown into delivering 50 healthy food hampers with hats and mitts, and books for children. This is now coordinated by 11 committee members, who work closely with DPPCA (Doon Pioneer Park Community Association). We are thankful for the continued support received from area schools, churches, businesses, and individuals over the past 39 years, and look forward to working with the community for the year 2022.

This will be our 40th year making this happen. With your help and support, we know we can do this. You make this project possible! We are all in this together!

Saint Timothy Weekly Update: November 28th to December 2nd

“What we need to do is learn to respect and embrace our differences until our differences don’t make a difference in how we are treated.” ~ Yolanda King

Welcome to our final week of November and the beginning of a new month. We usher in the beginning of Advent this week, a time when we prepare ourselves for the coming of Jesus Christ. What a wonderful time to open our hearts and truly feel the joy of the season.

As we begin a new week, listed are important information items and upcoming dates.

Thank you

  • to all our parents for your time this week as staff, students and parents collaborated in interviews to support each student and their path to success. While we only have interviews once a year, please know our door is always open to continuing the conversations.
  • to all that worked hard to make a difference last week as we celebrated Kindness and Anti-Bullying Prevention Week. We all learned how it takes a village to stand up and stomp out hatred in every form. Thank you to everyone who participated in our daily activities.
  • for your support in the upcoming weeks as we will share our Advent/Christmas initiatives – and we delight in our community support and how blessed we are to celebrate our faith in our school.
  • Mrs. Thorne for organizing our pizza days at our school.
  • Ms. Howitt, Ms. MacDonald, and Ms. Costa for their commitment to coaching our boy’s volleyball team. Good luck to all on the team as they head into a tournament this Tuesday afternoon at St. Mary High School.
  • to the Lagonia family for the generous donation of a Christmas Tree and lighting for our Angel Tree. We are so grateful for what you did.
  • for checking the forecast and being sure your children have dressed appropriately for the weather outside.

School Highlights

  • One more reminder – ArtShine program is coming back for a Winter Session. For more information including registration, please open the following link:
    ArtShine Program Winter Session
  • It’s that time of year again and the Scholastic Book Fair is back!  Our Virtual Fair will run from December 2nd to December 16th. If you chose to order books online through our Virtual Fair, the link is: Campaign page for Virtual Bookfair (scholastic.ca).  These online orders will be shipped to our school and then distributed to the students just in time for Christmas.  Thank you so much for all your support and we are looking forward to another successful Scholastic Book Fair!
  • From St. Aloysius Church – families in need in our school and parish community are invited to apply for Christmas Hampers which contain Gift Cards, non-perishable food items and new toys. Please see the attached letter: St. Aloysius Christmas Hamper Program 2022
  • On Friday, December 2nd we will have an Advent Liturgy at 10:30 AM. Father Melvin will preside and lead us in this joyful first-week Advent celebration of Hope.
  • We will pray as a community by celebrating each week of Advent with a prayer service led by our students and staff. Our students anticipate the celebration of Christ’s birth by lighting the candles on the Advent wreath that represents hope, peace, joy, and love.
  • Our school Christmas mass will be held at St. Aloysius Catholic Church on Thursday, December 22nd at 10:00 a.m. A permission form will be sent home this week and we ask you to please complete it and return it to school.  Parents, guardians, and friends are welcome to join us.
  • The school will also pray as a community by participating in an interactive Advent story entitled, “The Story of Christmas.” The story and accompanying Christmas ornaments help students understand the symbolic significance of the birth of Jesus and the importance of the Advent Season.
  • EcoSchool members will be participating in the Bondar Challenge photography competition. It is open to all students from age 6-18. The competition, which is sponsored by the astronaut Roberta Bondar, seeks to help people connect with nature through photography. Each student is allowed to enter one photo they have taken themselves. Please see https://ecoschools.ca/bondarchallenge/competition-rules/ for contest rules if you wish to enter.

Important Reminders

  • Our Catholic School Council will meet on Tuesday, November 29th at 6:30 pm in our Learning Commons/Library. Meetings are open to all members of our school community. Our council is seeking membership to plan and fundraise for a renewal project involving our creative playground. If you would like to be part of this important project or find out more information, please join us on the 29th.
  • Many families signed out Chromebooks in the event of continued CUPE labour disruption. These devices need to be returned to the school as soon as possible now that we are back in school. We really need to have all these devices and power cords returned to school as they are used in the classrooms every day.
  • It is critical that all bus families are signed up for email notifications regarding bus delays with Student Transportation Services(STSWR). Please know that we have absolutely no control over transportation issues and we receive the same delay notifications that parents/ guardians receive through this notification service.
How to subscribe for notification service with STSWR

Celebrating Advent As A Family

One of the most popular ways to celebrate Advent is with an Advent wreath or Advent candle holders. Four candles (three purple and one pink) are used to count down the weeks until Christmas. Each Sunday of Advent one of the candles is lit and special prayers are said around a particular theme leading up to the birth of Christ. The first Sunday, November 27th, of Advent, symbolizes Hope with the “Prophet’s Candle” reminding us that there is hope because Jesus is coming. We light a purple candle on the wreath. For more information on celebrating Advent as a Family, visit the PearsonSchoolCanada.ca – GIFGIC Advent Resources (pearsoncanadaschool.com) and Hamilton Diocese website

Angel Tree

Beginning on Monday, December 5th angels will be available to take from the tree in our school library.  Each angel will have the age of a boy or girl in it.  If you decide to allow your child(ren) to choose an angel from the tree, please indicate this in their agenda or let their teacher know.  Return the angel to school attached to the unwrapped gift that you purchase.  All angels and gifts must be returned by Friday, December 16th.  Thanking you in advance for your generosity.

Promoting Well-Being:  Help Your Child Succeed In School:  Build The Habit of Good Attendance

DID YOU KNOW?
Starting in kindergarten, too many absences can cause children to fall behind in school.
Missing 10 percent (or about 18 days) can make it harder to learn to read. Students can still fall behind if they miss just a day or two days every few weeks. Being late to school may lead to poor attendance.
Absences can affect the whole classroom if the teacher has to slow down learning to help children catch up.Attending school regularly helps children feel better about school—and themselves. Start building this habit in preschool so they learn right away that going to school on time, every day is important. Good attendance will help children do well in high school, college, and at work.: https://www.attendanceworks.org/

Umbrella Project

Develop your child’s capacity to practice
The ability to practice is one the most important pieces in persevering towards complex and long-term goals.  Without the ability to sustain effort and practice over time, many big dreams go unrealized. Here are a few tips when it comes to making practice effective and sustainable for your child:

  1. Schedule practice and rest time to avoid burnout. To perform at our best we need breaks, and teaching children this early on will really help them do their best. Determine how long your child can hold focus for and then set a timer for that amount of time while working or practicing something. Take short breaks between practice sessions to get some fresh air, run around, snack and recover for the next focused practice session. For example, you could do 15 minutes of practice, take a 5 minute break and then 15 more minutes of practice. Repeat this for the duration of their working time. Timed intervals will help your child stay on task and practice well.
  2. Find tasks that help your child work at the right level for their pre-existing ability. This will help them achieve a state of engagement and concentration when practicing (otherwise known as a state of flow). To achieve this state of flow, think about what we often refer to as the Goldilocks effect. Tasks should be not too hard.. not too easy.. just right! Tasks that are too difficult tend to create anxiety and those that are too easily lead to boredom. Both those states are detrimental to our capacity to practice something. When practicing, tasks should be challenging enough to require your child to recruit many skills to accomplish the task but not so hard that they can’t succeed.

Final Thought

The first Sunday of Advent this weekend (November 27th) gives us the opportunity to centre our thoughts on hope. There is a comfort to be found when we pause to read, pray, reflect and anticipate the celebration of Christ’s birth. It is a beautiful chance to remember the hope God offers to our troubled world, and that He has given us through Jesus.

“It is the beautiful task of Advent to awaken in all of us memories of goodness and thus to open doors of hope.” – Pope Benedict XVI

Saint Timothy Newswire: A Reminder and A Wish

Good afternoon Tigers,
This is just a reminder that tomorrow Wednesday, November 23rd is pizza lunch day for those students who have previously ordered.  Tomorrow is also picture re-take day.  Now for a wish …  we are in need of a Christmas tree for our angel tree program.  In order to meet the minimum fire safety requirements in our school, it must be artificial and have a ULC or UL fire resistance rating.  If you have a Christmas tree and would like to donate it, please contact the school.

Have a great evening!

Bullying Prevention and Awareness Week
November 20-26, 2022, is Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week in Ontario, and WCDSB will join school boards around the province in enhancing awareness and understanding about bullying, and the factors that contribute to safe, caring, and inclusive schools.

Throughout the week, staff and students will participate in various activities and events to support safe schools and encourage the fostering of positive school climates. These activities will increase awareness of what constitutes bullying and address the impact it can have on the overall school environment. Families are welcome to participate and pray with us at home.  Please see our plan for Make Your Mark Week! : WCDSB-St.-Timothy-Plan-2022-2023

By participating in Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week, our students will be affecting positive change in their learning, achievement, and well-being by promoting a safe learning environment, which is essential to their success.  Read more about our commitment to bullying prevention: St. Timothy Bullying Prevention and Intervention Plan 2022-2023.docx

As we prepare to celebrate the week ahead, let us remember that bullying is a relationship problem. Our goal is to help ensure that students have healthy, safe, respectful, and caring relationships that lead to a strong sense of belonging.

Progress and Kindergarten Initial Observations Reports

Monday, November 21st, Progress and Kindergarten Initial Observations Reports will be sent home.  If school is closed, it will be available for pick up at the school. I hope you will be able to recognize the strengths in learning so far and celebrate successes for the start of the year at school.  These initial reports highlight progress toward the end-of-the-year expectations. There is still lots of time to reflect on the next steps for growth in learning and set goals for the school year. Conferences are scheduled for this upcoming week and we look forward to connecting with our families. Please refer to your scheduled time (interview slips will be sent home with the reports).  Thank you for your continued support as partners in education.

Parent/Teacher/Student Interviews

The date and time for your child/children’s interviews will be included in the report envelope.  We look forward to continuing working with you and your child(ren) (our students!) to help each one of them learn, experience success, build relationships, and practice our faith every day.

As a parent, you are your child’s first and most important teacher. Saint Timothy and our parent community have something in common: We both want your child to learn and do well. When parents and teachers talk to each other, each person can share important information about your child’s talents and needs. Each party can also learn something new about how to help your child. Parent–Student-Teacher Interviews are a great way to start talking to your child’s teachers.

Here are some tips on ways that you can make the most of parent-teacher interviews so that everyone benefits, especially your child.

  1. Interviews are a two-way conversation. Like all good conversations, parent-teacher interviews are best when both parties talk and listen. The conference is a time for you to learn about your child’s progress in school. This is also a time for the teacher to learn about what your child is like at home. When you tell the teacher about your child’s skills, interests, needs, and dreams, the teacher can help your child more.
  2. Keep the emphasis of the conversation on learning. Good parent-teacher interviews focus on how well the child is doing in school. They also talk about how the child can do even better. To get ready for the conversation, look at your child’s homework, tests, and notices before the interview. Be sure to bring a list of questions that you would like to ask the teacher.  Think about ways you would like to be further involved in your child’s learning so that you can discuss them with the teacher.
  3. Discuss opportunities and challenges for your child. Just like you, teachers want your child to succeed. You will probably hear positive feedback about your child’s progress and areas for improvement. Be prepared by thinking about your child’s strengths and challenges beforehand. Be ready to ask questions about ways you and the teacher can help your child with some of his or her challenges.

Angel Tree

Beginning on Monday, December 5th angels will be available to take from the tree in our school library.  Each angel will have the age of a boy or girl in it.  If you decide to allow your child to choose an angel from the tree, please indicate this in their agenda or let their teacher know.  Return the angel to school attached to the unwrapped gift that you purchase.  All angels and gifts must be returned by Friday, December 16th.  Thanking you in advance for your generosity.

Umbrella Project

Think of small and meaningful ways you can connect day-to-day work with a higher sense of purpose.

Some very interesting research on grit showed that when students reflected on purpose, they worked harder on tedious math problems when given the option to watch entertaining videos instead. This doubled the amount of time they spent studying for exams.

It seems that living a life that reflects a bigger purpose also cultivates our ability to persevere towards our goals – our grit!  Help your children continue to think of small ways they can make school align with their core values and how the work they are doing is building towards something bigger.

So start with the Why.’ Many students work hard but report having no idea “why,” and no bigger vision for their education. We can do a lot to build grit just by helping our children understand why they are learning what they are learning. Without this, the school can feel boring or meaningless and won’t help our children sustain effort throughout their education.

Health & Happiness,
Dr. Jen, The Umbrella Project

Saint Timothy Newswire: WCDSB Update on Potential Strike

Dear Parents and Guardians:

As you may be aware, the Ontario government and education workers represented by the Canadian Union of Public Employees – Ontario – (CUPE) continue to negotiate in hopes of reaching a deal that works for all.  On Wednesday, November 16th, CUPE served five days’ notice that if no contract is reached, their workers would be on strike effective Monday, November 21, 2022.

CUPE and the government have negotiation dates scheduled up to and including Sunday, November 20, 2022.  It is our hope that a deal will be reached before Monday’s strike date and students can come to school as normal.

The WCDSB has more than 1,200 staff represented by CUPE,  in multiple different roles in schools.

As before – given such a large number of potentially absent staff, should a strike occur, it will not be possible to safely open and operate our schools.

If a strike occurs, and schools are closed to in-person attendance, we will move directly to synchronous remote learning.

Chromebooks that were previously requested will be sent home again with students on Thursday, November 17th.

A reminder that Friday, November 18th is a Professional Development Day for staff.  The school is closed to students.  Thank you for your patience and understanding as we work to ensure the learning of all students keeps moving forward.

We will keep you updated as further information becomes available.
