  • Just a reminder to parents/guardians to please notify the school in advance regarding personal appointments/early pick-ups.  Letting the school know (via email, child(ren)’s agenda or phone call) in advance of the appointment can assist us in getting the children prepared prior to your arrival. Students will be released from the classroom and are then asked to wait in the office, parents/guardians are to come into the school to sign them out.  We want to minimize the disruptions to the classrooms, therefore whenever possible it is best if parents/guardians can plan to pick up their children at the natural break times.  If you pick your children up before/after recess periods, your children will already be dressed for the weather, and are not pulled out in the middle of a lesson.

Christmas Concert Information

We are happy to welcome everyone to our Saint Timothy Christmas Concert which will take place in our school gymnasium.  Teachers and students have been working hard to prepare a fun and festive show.  Please join us in our gymnasium on Thursday, December 21st at 9:30 a.m.

Due to the high level of interest and limited seating available, we kindly request that families consider attending with a limited number of family members.  This will help ensure that as many families as possible can enjoy the concert.   If there are not enough seats it will be standing room only, and if we are above the fire code capacity, we will have to turn some people away.  There are no prearranged seats, and we ask that audience members be respectful of others that would like to enjoy the show as well.

Please be prepared to stay until the end of the school.  It is approximately two hours and there is no intermission.  If you must leave, please wait and do so only between selections.  Our front door will open 30 minutes prior to show time.

In anticipation of the event, we also would like to gather information regarding any potential plans for early withdrawal after the concert.  If you anticipate the need to leave after the performance, we kindly request that you inform your child(ren)’s classroom teacher in advance.  This will assist us in a smooth transition for both your child and our staff.

Many families would like to take pictures or videos of their children or of performances. Please remember that not everyone is comfortable with having their child’s or adult’s image captured or shared on social media, so we would ask you to please do your best to focus on your child or ask the family or the adult if you would like to take or post an image. We appreciate your consideration and attention to this matter.

Parking will be an issue.  If you can walk to this event, that would be greatly appreciated.  We ask that you do not block or park in any of the neighbours driveways or in our school parking lot as this is reserved for staff only.

Thank you for your cooperation and we look forward to bringing joy through music to our community!

Celebrating Advent As A Family

The Third Sunday of Advent is called Gaudete (Rejoice) Sunday. On this day we celebrate that our waiting for the birth of Jesus on Christmas day is almost over. Rose is a liturgical color that is used to signify Joy, so we light the single pink candle on the third Sunday of Advent. This candle is also known as the “Shepherd’s Candle” reminding us of the Joy the world experienced at the coming birth of Jesus. For more information on celebrating Advent as a Family, visit the Hamilton Diocese website.

Promoting Health and Well-Being – Christmas and Mental Health

How to reduce stress at Christmas
Christmas should be a time of merriment and joyous celebrations. A time when families and friends come together and have the most wonderful time! Well, that is what we all aspire to and in reality, it is an idyllic vision of how we would like Christmas to be. We have an idealized perspective and expectation that sets us up to fall short of perfection… because if we don’t achieve the perfect Christmas Day, then we may feel we have failed!

Stress at Christmas
We believe that taking care of your mental wellbeing is just as important during the festive period as your physical wellbeing. Stress is a body’s natural reaction to change, whether physical, mental or emotional. However, if stress is not alleviated it will build on itself making us feel like we have the weight of the world on our shoulders. And increased stress levels can lead to more serious physical and mental illnesses. So making sure our stress levels are kept in check is so important, particularly around this hectic and pressured festive period.

Advent Prayer and Reflection
In this third week of Advent, we light three candles on our Advent wreath. The third candle is the pink candle signifying “Joy” as we await the coming of our Lord Jesus.

Lord, the good news of Jesus’ arrival brings such joy to our world!
Reach those who are lost and searching with the message of hope that we have through the Messiah.
God, allow your message of peace to bring comfort to our anxious world.
As we all go about the holiday season, let the message of great joy pierce through
all the noise and into people’s hearts.
Amen

Saint Timothy Newswire: Weekly Update December 11th to 15th

“The extraordinary thing that is about to happen is matched only by the extraordinary moment just before it happens. Advent is the name of that moment.” – Frederick Buechner

We enter our 2nd week of advent this week.  Advent is a time when we light candles to help us count down the days to Christmas and prepare for the birth of Jesus. With each passing day, we get closer and closer to the joy of Christmas. Each week, our Advent wreath has one more candle bringing light to our world. Jesus is the light of the world, and Jesus said, “Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness but will have the light of life”.

Please refer to the information updates below:

Thank you …

  • to those families and staff members who have already generously supported our Angel Tree. This is a reminder that Friday, December 15th is the final day to submit gift cards and/or unwrapped gifts.  Thank you for your generosity and kindness.  Angel tree 2023
  • to our families who can support those in need by contributing to the Lutherwood Comfy Cozy Holiday Drive sponsored by Mrs. Phillips’ class. The donation’s due date has been shortened to Monday, December 11th:  School Comfy Cozy Letter + Combined List 2023
  • We extend our sincere congratulations to the boy’s volleyball team for their outstanding performance and we thank everyone for being a part of this memorable season.  A special thank you to Mr. Reyna, Mrs. Coughlan, and Mrs. Taves for their continued support and commitment to our students.

  • staff who have donated to wear denim in December to support specific families in need in our community.

School Highlights

  • Mrs. Phillips, Mr. Hutfluss and the Grade 8s will be on a residential retreat at Mount Mary in Ancaster, Ontario from December 13th to 15th. Let us keep them in our thoughts, and prayers and wish them a joyful experience.
  • Make sure you start choosing your snazzy Christmas outfits for our Christmas Spirt Days during the last week of school. We can’t wait to see our halls decked out in Christmas Cheer from December 18th to 22nd.

Important Reminders

  • Journey To Bethlehem Grades 1 to 8 – To ensure we have a great movie day this coming Tuesday, we would like to note some key reminders. First, students who have consent will attend the movie.  For students who do not have consent and will be attending school, an alternative location will be provided in the school.  Our school will be empty as most staff and students will be at the Cineplex Cinemas in Kitchener.  We will be leaving at 9:00 a.m. and should be back at our school by 12:30 p.m. If your child(ren) arrives late, please bring your child(ren) to the theatre.  If you will be keeping your child(ren) home that morning, please call the office so we can ensure our safe arrival attendance is completed.
  • When school buses are canceled (but schools are open) for inclement weather, all pizza or Pita Pit orders are CANCELLED for that day. Please make sure to send a lunch with your student. We will keep you updated on the new date as soon as it is confirmed.
  • Please Note: Saint Timothy is an allergen-reduced environment and even at Christmas, we must adhere to WCDSB protocol around foods coming into the school. Please monitor any foods coming in for snacks to ensure that they comply with the information: ‘Products that contain or ‘may contain’ peanuts and tree nuts are not to be brought onto the school site.’
  • If Your Child is Sick or Unwell – The colder weather has returned, therefore, the students must be dressed appropriately to go outside. If your child is sick, regardless of the symptoms, please do not send them to school. Seek medical advice or contact public health for further direction. We cannot safely supervise children during the day whose families would prefer that they not go outside. If your child is sick or injured and still recovering, but not able to go outside, they should remain at home until they are well enough to participate fully in all school activities, including recess. Please note that students may not enter the school grounds until 8:45 a.m., which is when supervision begins by our staff members.

WCDSB Updates

Please visit our School Board Website for updates and recent information.  Here is the link: http://www.wcdsb.ca

Supporting the Walk to School and the Bus Stop – How Long Does It Take To Walk To School?
The average rate of walking for an elementary school student is 4.34 kilometers per hour.  That means the average student can walk our maximum walking distance – 1.6 kilometers – in 22 minutes at a comfortable pace.  It probably doesn’t take that much longer than driving, and it’s a great way to add up those recommended 60 minutes of daily physical activity.

Inclement Weather Information – With winter weather upon us, families are reminded to visit the Waterloo Catholic District School Board’s (WCDSB) website for important information about the Inclement Weather Process:  APH008-00_InclementWeather.pdf (wcdsb.ca)

How Will My Family Be Notified About Inclement Weather Cancellations or Closures?
The decision to cancel student transportation (buses) and/or close schools due to inclement weather will be communicated to parents and guardians in the following ways
WCDSB Board Website: Waterloo Region’s Catholic Schools – Welcome to WCDSB
WCDSB’s Social Media Channels:  NewsWire (wcdsb.ca)    Waterloo Catholic DSB (@WaterlooCDSB) / X (twitter.com)
Student Transportation Services of Waterloo Region: Student Transportation Services of Waterloo Region (stswr.ca)
St. Timothy:  A newswire message will be posted on the newswire and an email will be sent to all parents and guardians on school messenger.

Bus Delays and Cancellations
– In the event of inclement weather, Student Transportation Services of Waterloo Region (stswr.ca) determines whether to cancel school transportation. Please note that when transportation is cancelled in the morning, it is cancelled for the entire day. As parents and guardians, you may choose to drive your children to school when transportation is cancelled but schools are open. If you decide to do so, please ensure you have made arrangements to pick up your children from school at the end of the school day. All transportation delays and cancellations are posted on the STSWR website. You can also subscribe to an email service to receive transportation notifications.  The safety of our students and staff is our highest priority.  Inclement weather decisions will be made in consultation with the WCDSB, based on information received through the latest reports on weather and road conditions.

Winter Weather and Snow

The snow season has shown itself to be unpredictable these past weeks!  We have seen glimpses of students LOVING playing in the snow.  You can help them enjoy it more by making sure they have extra clothing to stay warm including boots, snow pants, mittens, and hats. It would be helpful for students to keep an extra pair of dry mittens and socks in their backpacks as well. As per our Board’s policy, when the temperature is between -20°C and -27°C students will not be outside longer than 15 minutes.  When temperatures are colder than -27°C, students remain inside.

We have reminded our students of the dangers of throwing snow/ice and sliding on any icy spots/hills outside. Serious injury can often result from what is often considered ‘just good fun’ or ‘joking around’ in the snow. At school, we enforce the rule of NO SNOWBALLS being thrown at people at any time (imagine 300 students throwing snowballs…). Please reinforce this important rule with your children at home. This helps us all remain safe while walking to and from school each day and playing at recess.

We share the responsibility of snow removal on and around our property. The city is responsible for our sidewalks by the road. School personnel and board contractors are responsible for pathways and the parking lot. This involves both snow clearance and salting in certain areas. Our head custodian checks the ground conditions early every morning, and salting in some areas may occur. It is always important to be careful during the winter months when walking on pathways and sidewalks.

Christmas Concert Information

Our Saint Timothy students are preparing for another year of Christmas Cheer by sharing their singing talents in our annual Christmas Concert.

There are no prearranged seats, and we ask that audience members be respectful of others who would like to enjoy the show as well.  Doors will not open until 30 minutes before show time.

Celebrating Advent As A Family

The second candle on the Advent wreath represents Peace. Like the first candle, it is also purple. Often called the “Bethlehem Candle,” the second Advent candle reminds us of Mary and Joseph’s journey from Nazareth to Bethlehem before Mary gave birth to Jesus. Building on the meaning of the Prophecy Candle, this second candle recalls that after all the division, destruction, and dispersion of the kingdom in the Old Testament, there might finally be peace on Earth – Jesus is coming, and so is his Kingdom of Peace. As we read in the quote from Pope Francis, this light of peace shone forth from Bethlehem for all the world. This Advent light the second candle on Sunday, December 10, 2023. Promoting Health and Well-Being

Christmas and Mental Health
How might Christmas affect my mental health? Christmas can affect our mental health in lots of different ways. This could be if Christmas is part of your life, or if it’s happening around you. It’s a time of year that often puts extra pressure on us.

Christmas could affect your mental health if you:

  • Wish you didn’t have to deal with Christmas or find it stressful because of other events in your life
  • Feel alone or left out because everyone else seems happy when you’re not
  • Feel frustrated by other people’s views of a ‘perfect’ Christmas, if these feel different from your experiences
  • Have ideas about what Christmas should be like, feel as if you need to enjoy it, or worry something will disrupt it
  • Feel like Christmas gives you something to focus on and look forward to, and find it difficult when it’s over
  • Look back at difficult memories, regret things about the past, or worry about the coming new year
  • Feel overlooked, for example, if you celebrate other religious festivals or holidays that get less attention
  • Want to celebrate with someone who’s struggling

Saint Timothy Newswire: Weekly Update December 4th to 8th

“The extraordinary thing that is about to happen is matched only by the extraordinary moment just before it happens. Advent is the name of that moment.”
Frederick Buechner

Amid our hurry, as we prepare for Christmas, the Holy Season of Advent calls to us. This call to God’s people reminds us to slow down and wait “in joyful hope” as we do what we can to prepare for Christ’s coming. The word itself, Advent means coming or arrival. Advent is a time of preparation, a time to get our spiritual houses ready for the coming of Christ, anticipating his second coming and actively remembering his first coming to earth as a baby. Advent is a time of desire, longing, and expectancy.

Throughout the Advent season, our school will be fostering a sense of community and kindness, embodying the spirit of giving and gratitude.  I encourage you to engage in conversations with your children about the true meaning of this season and share in the excitement of the upcoming holidays.

Please refer to the information updates below:

Thank you …

  • to all of our families who have already picked an angel from our Angel Tree. Please consider selecting an angel and purchasing a gift or gift card (in a denomination of your choice). All gifts should be sent to school by December 15th and will go toward helping families in need during the holiday season: Angel Tree 2023. Thank you for your generosity!
  • to our amazing staff and students for all the time work and energy that you are putting into preparing for our Christmas Concert!
  • Mrs. Kolb, Mrs. Grebinski, and our students for organizing our upcoming Advent Mass, and Father Sunil for celebrating Mass with us. Parents/Guardians are welcome to attend our Advent Mass this Tuesday, December 5th at 1:00 p.m.
  • to our amazing students who have entered a Christmas card for our first annual St. Timothy Christmas Card contest. Students are asked to design a card and handed in by Monday, December 4th.  We will choose one card for each division.
  • Mrs. Zach for organizing our school-wide movie day set for Tuesday, December 12th in the morning at Cineplex Theatres. We will be viewing the movie “The Journey To Bethlehem.”
  • to all who have generously donated to the Lutherwood Comfy Cozy Holiday Drive. Mrs. Phillips and her students have decided to spread warmth, and joy to families in our community who are suffering from mental health issues and instability housing services.  It is not too late to donate: School Comfy Cozy Letter + Combined List 2023
  • to our school choir for the incredible performance of O’Canada at the recent Kitchener Rangers hockey game. Your dedication, talent, and hard work truly shone through. Mrs. Phillips guidance and expertise undoubtedly contributed to the exceptional quality of the performance.
  • to all students and staff who continue fostering a positive and spirited environment every Wednesday during our Spirit Wear Days. Congratulations to Mrs. Edgar and her class who had the most points. They will be receiving popcorn and a movie.

Thank you for your cooperation and we look forward to bringing joy through music to our community!
  • If your family requires any assistance during this upcoming Advent and Christmas season, please do not hesitate to contact Mrs. Presslee. Please join us in keeping our school community in our prayers this Advent Season.
  • As we continue to gear up for the winter season, we greatly appreciate your help in donating gently used winter essentials like coats, hats, gloves, and scarves. Your contributions will spread warmth and kindness. If you have any items to donate, please stop by the school office to drop off your winter goodies. If you’re a family that would benefit from some gently used items, please email Ms. Presslee at presslee@wcdsb.ca and we’ll make arrangements with you to select from the donated items.
  • We will be having Christmas Spirit Days during the last week of school so start looking for those items ……..
  • Please join me in welcoming Ms. Ajenifuja to our school community. Ms. Ajenifuja will be joining our Child Youth Care Worker team here at our school.
  • We recognize that the attendance profile for each child can be very unique.  However, when patterns or routines of non-attendance by a student are identified, we will proceed with interventions to support the student and their family. Notices including students identifying patterns of habitual tardiness that have reached a large threshold will be sent home. We ask you to please review the letter.
  • Bus evacuation drills were conducted in collaboration with Student Transportation Services of Waterloo Region. Parents/guardians can help ensure safe student transportation by reviewing and discussing safety rules and procedures with their children regularly. Our evacuation drills were preceded by a classroom discussion to discuss the basics of bus safety and to view a safety video. An actual drill with a bus onsite followed. For more transportation safety information, please visit:  https://www.stswr.ca/parents/safety-programs/
  • Last week our Catholic School Advisory Council met to discuss items on our agenda. Please see the minutes found on our school website: Catholic School Advisory Council – St. Timothy (wcdsb.ca)  Our next meeting is on January 31st and if you would like to join us, please contact the main office.

Supporting the Walk to School and the Bus Stop – Walking In Cold Weather?
We often use the cold weather as an excuse not to walk.  In 2003, the American Journal of Public Health reported that only about 12% of Canadians’ home-based trips (such as trips to grocery stores, walking, or school) were made on foot or bicycle, compared with 46% in the Netherlands and 41% in Denmark, where it is just as cold!

D2L App For Parents and Guardians – Video tutorials in Arabic, English, Spanish, Ukrainian, and Tigrinyan have been created to guide our families in getting connected to their students’ D2L classrooms. Videos are housed on the WCDSB Parent and Guardian Page and (scroll to the bottom).  Please click on the link WCDSB Brightspace Parent & Guardian (d2l.com) to access the recording of the parent webinar that was held at the end of September.

Celebrating Advent As A Family

One of the most popular ways to celebrate Advent is with an Advent wreath or Advent candle holders. Four candles (three purple and one pink), are used to count down the weeks until Christmas. Each Sunday of Advent one of the candles is lit and special prayers are said around a particular theme leading up to the birth of Christ. The first Sunday, December 3rd, of Advent, symbolizes Hope with the “Prophet’s Candle” reminding us that there is hope because Jesus is coming. We light a purple candle on the wreath. Ontario Catholic Graduate Expectations and Deep Learning Transferable Skill

During the season of Advent, it is most fitting that we wish to celebrate Learning Partnerships.  And as Catholics, we will show it through celebrating that we should all strive to be Caring Family Members at school and home.
How will we be a shining star for those we love and those who care for us this month, and always?
How will we change our lives for the better this Advent season?

Students will join together in a faith celebration to kick off this month’s theme and will then engage in a range of classroom activities aimed at developing these skills throughout the month.

THIS IS HOW I AM A CARING FAMILY MEMBER!
I love God, myself and my family
I care about and respect my ‘family’ at school, at Church, in the community, and the world
I care about and respect God’s creation and everything in it
Because I care, I pray for all my family, and I will live my life like Jesus.

Deep Learning Transferable Skill: Learning Partnerships
Transferable skills are the skills and attributes that students need to thrive in the modern world. Based on international research, the Ontario Ministry of Education has defined seven important categories of transferable skills – sometimes referred to as “competencies” – that will help students navigate the world of work and meet with success in the future.

During December, as Catholics, we will show transferable skills through active collaboration, not just with our classmates and teachers but also with community organizations like our parish church, and even with individuals from the global community. It’s about tackling real-world challenges together, participating in engaging activities, and exchanging ideas.  We encourage you to support your child’s learning partnerships at home by participating in our school Angel Tree and Comfy Cozy initiatives this month. You may also wish to visit our parish website for Advent Mass, resources, and community faith-based activities.  Thank you for your continued support and partnership.

Promoting Health and Well-Being: Positive Discipline For Young Children
The goal of discipline is to guide and teach, not to punish. The foundation of discipline is a warm and trusting relationship, where you help children learn to:

  • behave appropriately for their age in different situations,
  • recognize, express, and manage their emotions,
  • communicate,
  • get along with and trust others,
  • solve problems,
  • explore the world and learn appropriately.

Discipline should be fair and consistent. If you respond differently in similar situations or to similar behaviours, children will be confused. They won’t know what to expect.
Physical punishment—spanking, slapping, hitting, or shaming—can hurt children both physically and emotionally, and should never be used. There are much more effective ways to discipline children.
Using positive discipline techniques not only helps to guide children but also strengthens the connection you have with them.

Saint Timothy Newswire: Weekly Update November 28th to December 1st

“What we need to do is learn to respect and embrace our differences until our differences don’t make a difference in how we are treated.” – Yolanda King

Welcome to our final week of November and the beginning of a new month. We usher in the beginning of Advent next Sunday, a time when we prepare ourselves for the coming of Jesus Christ. What a wonderful time to open our hearts and truly feel the joy of the season.

As we begin a new week, listed below are important information items and upcoming dates.

Thank you …

  • for your participation in our parent-student-teacher interviews this past week. Your involvement is invaluable to your child’s education, and we are grateful for the opportunity to discuss their progress with you!
  • to all who worked hard to make a difference last week as we celebrated Kindness and Anti-Bullying Prevention Week. We all learned how it takes a village to stand up and stomp out hatred in every form. Thank you to everyone who participated in our daily activities.
  • for your support in the upcoming weeks as we will share our Advent/Christmas initiatives – and we delight in our community support and how blessed we are to celebrate our faith in our school.
  • Yvette Thorne and Mrs. Presslee for organizing our pizza days at our school.
  • Mrs. Coughlan, Mrs. Taves, and Mr. Reyna for their commitment to coaching our boy’s volleyball team. Good luck to all on the team as they head into a tournament next week at St. Mary High School.
  • to our Catholic School Advisory Council and to the parents who attended our Meeting on Tuesday, November 21st. Your support, input, and feedback are greatly appreciated!
  • School Advisory Council for approving the following expenditures or making contributions that will benefit our students: outdoor recess equipment, classroom programs, Grade 8 Mount Mary Trip, and Social Networking Safety Presentation.
  • Intermediate students who participated in St. Mary’s Random Acts of Kindness Day. Students wrote letters to patients at local hospitals. The cards will help to brighten the day of community members who are going through difficult times.

School Highlights

  • Please consider donating to our Angel Tree program. Angels are available to take from our Christmas Tree in our Learning Commons Room. Gifts including gift cards can be brought back to school up to Friday, December 15th. For more information, please read the following letter: Angel Tree 2023 Thank you for your generosity.
  • Our Saint Timothy students are preparing for another year of Christmas Cheer by sharing their singing talents in our annual Christmas Concert. Please join us in our gymnasium on Thursday, December 21st at 9:30 a.m.
  • We will pray as a community by celebrating each week of Advent with a prayer service led by our students and staff. Our students anticipate the celebration of Christ’s birth by lighting the candles on the Advent wreath that represents hope, peace, joy, and love.
  • The school will also pray as a community by participating in an interactive “Story Book Set and Advent Calendar.” The story and accompanying Christmas ornaments help students understand the symbolic significance of the birth of Jesus and the importance of the Advent Season.
  • Bullying Awareness and Prevention: This past week we focused on the importance of promoting safe schools, increasing awareness of what constitutes bullying and the impact it has on our overall school environment. These conversations will continue throughout our school year, emphasizing to all students what it means to be an upstander and nurturing a culture of love and care. Families are encouraged to continue this dialogue at home, reminding students about the Golden Rule and how their words and actions can inspire kindness among their peers and affect positive change in our school community.
  • We had an amazing presentation last week by the Saidat Show on the power of Kindness, Respect, and how one person can change the world! Thank you to our Energy Crew of students in grades 6, 7, and 8 for all your support.

Important Reminders

  • On Tuesday, December 5th we will have an Advent Liturgy at 1:00 AM. Father Sunil will preside and lead us in this joyful first-week Advent celebration of hope.
  • From St. Aloysius Church – families in need in our school and parish community are invited to apply for Christmas Hampers which contain Gift Cards, non-perishable food items, and new toys. Please see the attached letter: St. Aloysius Hamper Program
  • Reconciliation for Grades 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8 will take place in the Learning Commons Room on Thursday, December 7th and 8th. Confession holds significance for personal growth, healing and we hope many of our students will approach it with consideration and a commitment to change when needed.
  • International Day of Persons with Disabilities takes place each year on December 3rd. This day is set aside to increase knowledge and understanding about disabilities.
  • Calling all future Eagles! Join us on Thursday, November 30th at 6:30 p.m. at St. Mary High School to learn more about transition to high school. Future Eagles – St. Mary’s High School (wcdsb.ca)
  • We are having our first annual Saint Timothy Christmas Card contest. Students are asked to design a card and handed in by Monday, December 4th. We will choose one card for each division.
  • Snow should be coming! Please check the forecast and ensure your child are dressed appropriately for the weather outside. The changing weather can be challenging to plan for – but students must come to school with boots and warm clothes in snowy/wet weather. This also means it is time to send extra mittens and socks. Indoor shoes that are appropriate for the gym are essential too.

Supporting the Walk to School and the Bus Stop:
Walking is an environmentally sustainable form of transportation. Climate change is one of the most pressing issues facing communities, our country, and the international community. Walking is one easy way to replace a car trip and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Nine families walking to school each day can prevent up to 1000 kg of carbon dioxide from being emitted into our neighborhood.

Promoting Health and Well-Being
Support Emotional Development in Teens

Teen Emotional Development: Adolescence is an exciting and unique time of growth. It is a time when teens go through intense emotional development and maturation. They may be questioning themselves — asking, “Am I normal?” “Do I fit in?” and “Who Am I?” Along with developing bodies, they may also experience more extreme emotional highs and lows. This may be in part because they face more responsibilities and challenges at school or at home. As teens grow older and mature, they develop the skills needed to handle new challenges. However, they still need support and guidance from parents and trusted adults in their journey towards adulthood.

Today is the last Sunday of the liturgical year before we begin the season of Advent. As such, today is the Solemnity of Jesus Christ, King of the Universe.

Lord, Jesus Christ, Our Sovereign King, the beginning, and end of all things,
You have made your Church to be a people that bears witness to the goodness and beauty of your kingdom.
By your Holy Spirit, you have united us as one body, called to live as one family of God.
Fill our hearts with your grace, that we would be close to you by being close to the vulnerable and marginalized.
Give us the patience to share one another’s burdens, and give us the courage to always be friends of the truth. May we remain with you always. Amen.

Supporting the Walk to School and the Bus Stop – Walking/Cycling Prevents Chronic Disease
According to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, physical activity helps prevent some chronic diseases including heart disease, hypertension, stroke, type 2 diabetes, and certain cancers.  For instance, some researchers found that the risk of obesity decreases by almost 5% for every kilometre walked each day!

Progress/Kindergarten Initial Observation Reports and Parent-Student Teacher Interviews

Monday, November 20th, Progress and Kindergarten Initial observation reports will be sent home with your child(ren).  I hope you will be able to recognize the strengths in learning so far and celebrate successes for the start of the year at school.  These initial reports highlight progress towards the end of the year expectations. There is still lots of time to reflect on the next steps for growth in learning and set goals for the school year.

Conferences are scheduled for Thursday evening from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and we look forward to connecting with our families. We strongly encourage you to bring your child(ren) to this event as they are a part of the conversation as well.  Most classroom teachers will host the interviews in their classrooms.  Portable classroom interviews will take place in the Learning Commons Room (library).  Please be sure you have booked a conference or reached out to your child(ren)’s teacher.

As a parent, you are your child’s first and most important teacher. Saint Timothy and our parent community have something in common: We both want your child to learn and do well. When parents and teachers talk to each other, each person can share important information about your child’s talents and needs. Each party can also learn something new about how to help your child. Parent–Student-Teacher Interviews are a great way to start talking to your child’s teachers.

Here are some tips on ways that you can make the most of parent-student-teacher interviews so that everyone benefits, especially your child.

  1. Interviews are a two-way conversation. Like all good conversations, interviews are best when both parties talk and listen. The conference is a time for you to learn about your child’s progress in school. This is also a time for the teacher to learn about what your child is like at home. When you tell the teacher about your child’s skills, interests, needs, and dreams, the teacher can help your child more.
  2. Keep the emphasis of the conversation on learning. Good interviews focus on how well the child is doing in school. They also talk about how the child can do even better. To get ready for the conversation, look at your child’s homework, tests, and notices before the interview. Be sure to bring a list of questions that you would like to ask the teacher.  Think about ways you would like to be further involved in your child’s learning so that you can discuss them with the teacher.
  3. Discuss opportunities and challenges for your child. Just like you, teachers want your child to succeed. You will probably hear positive feedback about your child’s progress and areas for improvement. Be prepared by thinking about your child’s strengths and challenges beforehand. Be ready to ask questions about ways you and the teacher can help your child with some of his or her challenges.
  4. After you go. Feel free to call the teacher if you think that a follow-up conference may be necessary.  Be involved with your child in creating a positive learning environment at home and school.

Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week

November 20-25, 2023 is Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week in Ontario, and WCDSB will join school boards around the province in enhancing awareness and understanding about bullying, and the factors that contribute to safe, caring and inclusive schools.

Throughout the week, staff and students will participate in various activities and events to support safe schools and encourage the fostering of positive school climates. These activities will increase awareness of what constitutes bullying and address the impact it can have on the overall school environment. This includes a school-wide assembly presentation from the Saidat Show.  Families are welcome to participate and pray with us at home.  Please see our plan for the week: Anti Bullying Week 2023-2024

By participating in Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week, our students will be affecting positive change in their learning, achievement and well-being by promoting a safe learning environment, which is essential to their success.  Read about our commitment to bullying prevention: St. Timothy Bullying Prevention and Intervention Plan 2023-2024

Resources for Parents and Students:

As we prepare to celebrate the week ahead, let us remember that bullying is a relationship problem. Our goal is to help ensure that students have healthy, safe, respectful, and caring relationships that lead to a strong sense of belonging: St. Timothy Parent-Information-on-Bullying-September (1)

Bullying vs Conflict

Bullying is defined as a form of (typically) repeated, persistent, and aggressive behaviour directed at an individual or individuals that is intended to cause (or should be known to cause) fear and distress and/or harm to another person’s body, feelings, self-esteem, or reputation. Bullying occurs in a context where there is a real or perceived power imbalance.

Bullying is when one person continually uses mean, negative, harmful and aggressive words or actions towards or about another person on purpose, while fully understanding that what they are doing is wrong and hurtful but do it anyways to make themselves feel bigger and more powerful while making the other person feel small and powerless.

A power imbalance may occur between a student and another individual based on factors such as size, strength, age, intelligence, peer group power, economic status, social status, religion, sexual orientation, family circumstances, gender, gender identity, gender expression, race, disability or receipt of special education. Bullying usually happens when one or more students tease, threaten, spread rumours about, exclude, hit, shove, or hurt another person

Saint Timothy School recognizes the importance of teaching our students the difference between bullying, rude or mean behaviour, and conflict while respecting all actions that can be upsetting to any student.  People sometimes confuse conflict with bullying, but they are different.

Conflict between students does not always mean it’s bullying. Conflict occurs between people who have a disagreement, a difference of opinion or different views. When there is conflict, each person feels comfortable expressing their views. Children learn at a young age to understand that others can have different perspectives than their own. Developing the ability to gain perspective takes time and continues into early adulthood.

Promoting Well-Being

Age-appropriate chores for kids: Building life skills for future success

Our goal in parenting is to raise children prepared to thrive far into the future. If only the route they chose was uniformly smooth and our role was just to be the wind behind their sails. But the course, in the best of cases, is bumpy. Therefore, our challenge is to help them learn from their mistakes, move forward, and somehow be better off precisely because of the wisdom gained from their experiences. As a parent, there are a few things you can do — and others you shouldn’t — to ensure your child learns from mistakes.

Saint Timothy Newswire: Weekly Update November 13th to 17th

“God can act in any circumstance, even in the midst of defeat.”  – Pope Francis

Welcome to a wonderful new week. Thank you to all who were able to join us on Friday for our Remembrance Day ceremony and thank you to our grade 7, and 8 students, Mr. Hutfluss and Mrs. Phillips for doing such a beautiful job in hosting. Now more than ever it is important for us to remember the sacrifices that have been made and that peace can only be attained when we can love our neighbour as we love ourselves.

As we begin a new week, listed below are important information items and upcoming dates:

Thank you …

  • to our Saint Timothy student morning announcers for setting the tone for the day and building a sense of school community.
  • parents, for your support of our Safe Arrival procedure and reporting your child’s absence.
  • Catholic Advisory School Council for their leadership in our Halloween Dance-a-thon.  The school raised $4293.79. Thank you to all families for your efforts in assisting us with our major fundraiser this year! The money raised from this initiative will go directly to support students including but not limited to costs associated with Grade 8 graduation, presentations, extra classroom materials, and agendas/planners.
  • Mrs. Coughlan, Mrs. Taves, and Mr. Reyna for all of your time and commitment with our boys’s Volleyball team.
  • to the many of you who are putting safety first and staying out of the parking lot. We have students moving quickly to either get in the building or leave the building and are less likely to be looking both ways before crossing the parking lot.

School Highlights

  • Congratulations to our students who were selected last month for being “A Responsible Citizen and Effective Communicator. The focus was on Digital Literacy and students were given a certificate. Recipients were recognized for the ability to select digital tools to collaborate, communicate, create, innovate, and solve problems.
  • Tuesday, November 14th is World Diabetes Day. We are encouraging everyone to wear Blue in support of World Diabetes Day. This provides an opportunity to raise awareness of diabetes as a global public health issue and what needs to be done, collectively and individually, for better prevention, diagnosis, and management of the condition.
  • As the longer, darker, colder days of November set in, it’s not uncommon for energies to wain and moods to get a little down, so what a perfect time to celebrate World Kindness Day...and why not turn that day into a week? Tomorrow is World Kindness Day. Groups and individuals are encouraged to go out of their way to be kind to others, whether that be at home, work, school, or just out in the general public.
  • ARTSHINE: Our school will be offering two programs for the winter season. For more information, please review the following letters: StTimothy(3-6)_Kitchener_Winter1      StTimothy(JK-2)_Kitchener_Winter1_SALE
  • This week will be a very exciting week at our school. We will have our REWARD WEEK for the many rewards that were earned as part of our Halloween Dance-a-thon.  Please take a look at the schedule below for the events.

Important Reminders

  • Just a reminder that photo retake day is scheduled for Monday, November 20th.  Original proofs have been delivered to the school and have been sent home with your child(ren). These proofs have a unique access code which will allow families to view photos and order pictures directly from the Pegasus website.  No money or orders will be collected by the school.  All ordering information can be done online at HOME – Pegasus School Images (pegasus-si.com)

Progress Reports and Parent-Student-Teacher Interviews

At the Waterloo Catholic District School Board, school communities exist to foster and exemplify Catholic values. Educational programs, facilitated in the context of faith, promote the intellectual, physical, social, and spiritual development of students. On November 20th, 2023, the Progress Reports for Grades 1 – 8, and Kindergarten Communication of Learning: Initial Observations, will be sent home with your child(ren).

Parents / Guardians have the right and responsibility to participate actively in your child’s education.  As such, interviews with your child’s teacher(s) will be offered on Thursday, November 23rd, 2023, during the afternoon/evening.  Saint Timothy is using an online booking system called  St. Timothy Parent-Student-Teacher Interviews to book an interview with your child(ren)’s teachers or educator teams.  The booking window is open and will close on Friday, November 17th.  Please note the scheduling tool is based on a first come, first serve basis.  Once the schedule has been completed, you will receive further information from your child’s teacher closer to the date of the interview.

Winter Is Approaching

Buses – As we prepare for the winter season, parents are reminded to visit our school website, as well as the Waterloo Catholic District School Board website for important information, reminders and procedures regarding inclement weather. If you have not already done so, please sign up for automatic notifications from Student Transportation Services of Waterloo Region – BusPlanner Web – BusPlanner Web (stswr.ca)

Attire – Please ensure your child is dressed each day to play outside at recess. Students are outside for all regular outside activities when it is warmer than -19°C. When temperatures range between -20°C to -27°C, students may remain outside for no longer than 15-minute intervals, once temperatures are colder than -28°C students must remain inside. We would like to take this opportunity to remind parents that their children must come to school with proper winter wear for outside recess.  Students are encouraged to pack extra clothing and accessories in their backpacks for the winter season!

Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week

Ontario has designated the week beginning on the third Sunday of November as Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week to help promote safe schools and a positive learning environment. During Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week – November 20-25, 2023 – Ontario students, school staff, and parents are encouraged to learn more about bullying and its effect on student learning and well-being.

Once again, the WCDSB will be participating in the National Anti-Bullying Awareness Week.  This year the theme is Strengthen.  Anchored in St. Paul’s exhortation to the burgeoning Christian community at Philippi, the WCDSB community proclaims in faith: “I can do all things through the One who strengthens me” (Phil.4.13), because we are the People of God, listening and growing, and called to share the Good News!

Throughout the week of November 20th – 24th, 2023, Saint Timothy students will be involved in a variety of class activities and school-wide initiatives that will focus on Rebuilding, Renewing, and Restoring our virtue of KINDNESS.

Promoting Well-Being

Age-appropriate chores for kids: Building life skills for future success… by Katharine Watts, November 2, 2023

You can build independence and a sense of responsibility in your kids—from toddlers to tweens—by assigning them age-appropriate chores. It’s my four-year-old’s job to put the cutlery away every morning when we empty the dishwasher. Believe it or not, it’s actually been one of her family jobs since she was two. The forks and spoons didn’t always end up where they were supposed to, but now she knows exactly where everything belongs, and she feels proud to be contributing to the family’s workload (and we’re grateful for the help!).

Chores not only help children develop essential life skills but also foster a sense of teamwork and contribution to the family. It may seem strange to assign your two-year-old tasks, but we actually do our kids a disservice by not trusting them to contribute. Taking responsibility for family chores makes kids feel like they’re part of an ecosystem that works together to keep everything running smoothly.

And, naturally, when children do chores, they’re moving and expending energy. And most chores help them develop movement skills like manipulation and balance. Check the lists below for some ideas of age-appropriate chores for your child.
