Easter Sunday – March 31st

“This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad. Alleluia!” – Psalm 118

Easter is the most significant celebration in the church year. Catholics celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. Easter is an octave, lasting eight days.

The readings for Easter show that God sent his Son to free us and let us live without fear of death. The message of the empty tomb was confusing when the disciples first encountered it. Where had they taken the body? What has happened here? But they are reminded of Jesus’ words and then it made sense. The experiences of our own lives can be confusing when we try to interpret them without faith. Some reflection questions to think about while we celebrate Jesus’ resurrection: Think about a time when life was confusing, did you turn to faith? How can you spread the good news today?

Cell Phones At School: Not recommended

We are reaching out for your continued support in your child’s positive school community and academic learning. We strongly encourage cell phones and ear pods are NOT brought to school. Should a student NEED to bring a cell phone it should be turned off during the day and in their school bag. The only time cell phones are permitted to be used during the school day is with an exception, with teacher permission. We have Chromebook devices for instructional purposes, so cell phones are not needed. We have phones in the office and all classrooms, any communication with students during the day should go through a teacher or the office. Should a student bring a cell phone and/or ear pods to school and they are using them without permission they will be directed to the office and a call home may follow as well.

Cell phones are a normal part of life for many kids. Staying in touch with friends is important to preteens and teens. However, if phone use is getting in the way of family time, homework, and other responsibilities, it might be time to help your kid manage their phone time too. Here are a few great places to start if you are looking for resources too.

Ontario Catholic Graduate Expectations

In April, we will focus on our Catholic Graduates’ expectation of being a Responsible Citizen.  We will engage in a range of classroom activities aimed at developing this skill throughout the month.

  • I am fair
  • I am a peace-maker
  • I am forgiving
  • I follow rules and do my share
  • I help the poor and care for people in need
  • I stand up for what is right
  • I know that all life is precious
  • I respect and protect the world and all that is in it

Because I accept my responsibilities, I can make a difference and will live my life like Jesus.

Deep Learning: Transferable Skill

Transferable skills are the skills and attributes that students need to thrive in the modern world. Sometimes called “competencies” – they will help students navigate the world of work and meet with success in the future.

As Catholics, we will show transferable skills through Global Citizenship and Sustainability in April, which involves understanding diverse world views and perspectives. It involves gaining information, motivation, and skills to appreciate the world’s diversity of people and perspectives. It calls for envisioning and working towards a better, more sustainable future for all. Thank you for your continued support and partnership in cultivating a dynamic and enriching educational experience for your child(ren).

Promoting Health/Well-Being – Raising Mentally Strong Kids

Parenting today is not an easy job. The number and array of outside influences on kids are, thanks to the internet, approximately infinite, perpetually evolving, and way beyond the reach of parents, instantly available—not to mention sometimes antithetical to healthy development. At the same time, many parents are confused about what kids need most. The result is a mental health crisis among young people today. But it doesn’t have to be this way. Lenten Reflection For Palm Sunday, March 24th

As we enter into Holy Week, the readings for Palm Sunday (Passion Sunday) tell of the death of Jesus Christ, who showed us the true meaning of love and the nature of God. The reading for the Procession of the Palms recounts how Jesus was greeted by crowds while entering Jerusalem. The first reading tells how we will be saved by a servant. The psalm was quoted by Jesus from the cross. The second reading speaks of how Jesus was obedient to the Father. In the gospel, we remember how Jesus suffered and died for each of us so that we could know life. During Holy Week, identify a local charity that truly does good for people in our area. Ask God what you might do to help them.

The Importance of Holy Week

This week is Holy Week, a most sacred time of year. We commemorate and remember the last week of Jesus’ life on earth. The season of Lent, the season of sacrifice and self-denial is about to come to an end.

It begins today with Palm Sunday – Sunday, March 24th. On Palm Sunday, we remember Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem, which occurred several days before his death. The people of Jerusalem spread palm branches on the road to welcome Jesus as he rode into the city. During this liturgy, palms are distributed to the community and blessed. It continues with the reading of the Passion – the story of Jesus’ suffering and death.

It continues with the Triduum, which is the three-day period marking Jesus’ death and burial. It begins on Holy Thursday and concludes as Easter begins.

Holy Thursday ~ Thursday, March 28th – The Last Supper – the meal Jesus shared with His apostles on the night he was betrayed and arrested. Typically, at the Mass on this day, the priest washes the feet of twelve people, just as Jesus did. We also celebrate the institution of the Eucharist, a central sacrament of the Catholic faith.

We observe Good Friday Friday, March 29th,  as the day Jesus was crucified and died. It is the most somber day on the Christian calendar. A service is held at three o’clock, the hour he died. It is the only day of the year that we do not celebrate Mass. The communion we receive at this liturgy was consecrated the night before. We also venerate the cross, showing honour and respect for the sacrifice Jesus made for our sake. Good Friday is a day of fasting and abstinence from meat for Catholics.

Holy Saturday, Saturday, March 30th is a vigil. It takes place after sundown. We keep watch for the expectant rising of our Saviour. It is the most beautiful liturgy of the entire Church year. It begins in darkness and then there is a lighting and blessing of the new fire. The Easter candle is lit and carried into the church, where it is used to light candles held by the members of the community. The Liturgy of the Word leads us to reflect on the entire story of our faith. On this night, people who have been preparing for months are received through Baptism and Confirmation into the Catholic Church.

This brings us to Easter Sunday – Sunday, March 31st, the MOST important Christian holiday, surpassing even Christmas.

Promoting Health/Well-Being – Solar Eclipse Safety Tips

On the afternoon of April 8, 2024, parts of Southern Ontario will witness a total eclipse of the sun, which happens when the moon passes between the Sun and Earth casting a shadow on Earth that either fully or partially blocks the sun’s light in some areas.

Safety is the number one priority when viewing a total solar eclipse. It is not safe to look directly at the sun without specialized eye protection.
Viewing any part of the bright sun through a camera lens, binoculars or a telescope without a special-purpose solar filter secured over the front of the optics will instantly cause severe eye injury.

Canadian Association of Optimists has provided some tips that will help you enjoy watching an eclipse safely:

  1. Safety Focus: Ensure your eyes are protected at all times by using approved solar eclipse viewers that meet international standard ISO 12312-2 for safe viewing. Make sure that the glasses are not damaged or scratched before use. Sunglasses, even those with a very dark tint are not sufficient protection.
  2. Don’t Get Burned! Staring at the Sun without protection may cause damage to your retina (the tissue at the back of your eye) called “solar retinopathy.” This damage can occur without any sensation of pain. The injury can be temporary or permanent. Visit your local Doctor of Optometry immediately if an accident occurs.
  3. Go Indirect – Project: If you can’t find eclipse viewers, make a pinhole projector to watch the eclipse. It’s important to only watch the screen, not the Sun. Never look at the Sun through the pinhole.
  4. Watch Online: Check out the NASA/Exploratorium livestream
  5. Check It Out: If you experience any problems with your eyes or vision after the eclipse, visit your optometrist promptly.

“During Lent, let us find concrete ways to overcome our indifference.” – Pope Francis

Welcome Back! We hope you had a restful March Break with your family and friends. Please refer to events, information, and reminders below.

Learning At Home:  Why doesn’t my child have math homework? This is a question we hear from families…A LOT! The truth is learning looks different today than it did when we were in school. There is no math textbook at elementary school. The majority of the learning that students do in school is “hands on” inquiry based instruction using online learning platforms such as Mathology. Students do not use repetitive math drill sheets or textbook exercises as part of their day to day math learning. However, you are encouraged to support your child’s math learning at home using the Math @Home Resources provided by our board.

Parents are strongly encouraged to reach out to their child’s teacher throughout the school year to build the partnership between home and school. Traditional homework exercises may not exist but school work at home can be very valuable when it is connected to real life problems and tasks. Examples are provided in each of the Math @ Home Monthly newsletters found on our board website.

D2L Parent and Guardian Portal App: Video tutorials in Arabic, English, Spanish, Ukrainian, and Tigrinyan have been created to guide our families in getting connected to their students’ D2L classrooms. Videos are housed on the WCDSB Parent and Guardian Page (scroll to the bottom).  Parents only need to go through the steps once and all their students who attend WCDSB schools will populate in the app.
PLEASE NOTE: you must have an updated email on file with your child’s school in order to access your child’s D2L page. Please contact the main office if you are having difficulty signing up for the parent portal.

Lenten Reflection

Reflect upon the glorious scene of the Transfiguration. This image teaches us about the entire plan of God throughout time. Prayerfully ponder the idea that Jesus is inviting you to make the arduous journey up the mountain of prayer, self-discipline, virtue and holiness. Pray that your eyes will be open to see His glory and that this experience will inspire you and strengthen you to continue to fulfill the mission of God started long ago, until it comes to completion when He returns at the end of time.

“Lent is a good time for sacrificing. Let us deny ourselves something every day to help others.” – Pope Francis

Welcome back to another exciting week at Saint Timothy. God bless as we all continue our Lenten journey and continue to pray, fast and give alms. This is the final week of school before March Break. We wish all our Tiger families a relaxing break!

Please refer to events, information, and reminders below.

During this sacrament, the children asked God’s forgiveness and received God’s grace to make good choices. We are proud of our Grade 2 students and join with their families in recognizing this important next step in their faith journey. We are grateful for the support and faith guidance of Father Sunil, Father Melvin, and the St. Aloysius Parish Staff.
  • to our community for your continued support this year. We are blessed with an amazing school community.

And when women themselves are inspired to be included, there’s a sense of belonging, relevance, and empowerment. Collectively, let’s forge a more inclusive world for women. Read more about a definition of what it means to inspire inclusion here.
  • Celebrated annually on March 26, Epilepsy Awareness Day, or Purple Day, was created to increase the public’s understanding of this brain disorder and to eliminate the fear and stigma surrounding it. Please wear purple to show your support.

  • The next Catholic School Council Meeting will take place on Tuesday, April 9th at 6:30 p.m. in the school learning commons.  As always, all parents are welcome to attend and learn more about what we do, and how we support our students.
  • Lates/Absences: Please notify the office if your child is going to be absent or late for any reason. If they are not at school when the 9:00 a.m. bell rings they are considered late. Please do your best to get your child(ren) to school on time to build a routine so they are prepared for the instructional day.
  • Morning Supervision: Please have your child on the blacktop ready to line up anytime between 8:45 –  9:00 am as they do enter quickly as soon as the 9:00 am morning bell rings.
  • Do you want to save a potential phone call that would interrupt your busy day?  Now that the snow and ice are melting in our yard, the mud and water are back in full force.  We continue to look into a potential fix to our backyard issues, but in the meantime, it may be wise to send an extra change of clothing with your children to school.  This way, if they have a slip or fall and they get muddy or wet, we already have a change of clothing here and do not need to interrupt you at home or work. It may save some time and it is a comfort to your children to know that they can change immediately instead of having to sit in wet or muddy clothing.
  • A reminder for families that March Break will take place from Friday, March 8th to Friday, March 15th. Students will return to school on Monday, March 18th.

Lenten Initiative

The three pillars of Lent are prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. Almsgiving is an outward sign of Christian love for others. This year, as part of our school’s almsgiving, Saint Timothy’s Lenten initiative will support St. John’s Kitchen.  For over 30 years, people have come to St. John’s Kitchen for daily meals.  It is a place where people come together in the spirit of respect and mutual support.  Students are invited to bring in donations to school throughout the Lenten season.  We are collecting much-needed food items for the Working Centre including dried herbs, pudding and Jello cups, chocolate bars, instant oatmeal, Mr. Noodles and more.  The Working Centre will distribute these items to St. John’s Kitchen in Kitchener.    Thank you in advance for your generosity.

The Season of Lent

The season of Lent is a high point in the Catholic calendar. It is an opportunity for “spiritual self-improvement” as we look towards living Lent with mercy. Lent focuses on an increased emphasis on prayer, fasting and almsgiving. During the season of Lent, a wonderful preparation period for the joy of Easter and the Resurrection. It is a season of penance, reflection, and fasting which prepares us for Christ’s Resurrection on Easter Sunday. We look forward to the experience of opening our hearts to those living on the outermost fringes of society: fringes that modern society itself creates. During Lent, we are called to open our eyes and see the misery of the world and the wounds of our brothers and sisters who are denied their dignity.   Let us recognize that we are compelled to reach out and support them, so they can feel the warmth of our compassion.

For more information and special videos, please click here. You can also review this Lenten calendar with your children, which includes a variety of messages and resources: 2024 Lent Solidarity Calendar

Ontario Catholic Graduate Expectations

During March, as Catholics, we will show transferable skills through being a Discerning Believer.  A Discerning Believer is formed in the Catholic Faith Community who celebrates the signs and sacred mystery of God’s presence through word, sacrament, prayer, forgiveness, reflection, and moral living.  Students will engage in a range of classroom activities aimed at developing this skill throughout the month.

Being a Discerning Believer:  I AM A BELIEVER!

  • I believe that God is an awesome God
  • I believe and have faith in God
  • I believe that God is with us always
  • I believe that we can talk to God anytime and anywhere, through prayer
  • I believe in the stories of the Bible
  • I believe in the stories of Jesus’ life, death and resurrection
  • I believe in the Church community, celebrating Mass, and the seven Sacraments
  • I believe in forgiveness

Because I am a believer, I will live my life like Jesus.

Thank you for your continued support and partnership in cultivating a dynamic and enriching educational experience for your child.

Promoting Health and Well-Being – How To Help Cope With Disappointment

Whether it’s a cancelled play date, an ice cream cone that falls on the ground, a scoreless soccer game, or a broken promise due to unforeseen circumstances, life is full of disappointments of varying sizes. While the gut instinct of the caring parent might very well be to sweep the disappointment out of the way by offering a quick solution, parents can’t always protect their kids from letdowns. And that’s okay.
When children learn that they have what it takes to work through the difficult feelings caused by disappointing situations, they build resilience and coping skills. This empowers them to recover from setbacks, solve problems independently, and figure out how to process negative emotions. Disappointment, as it turns out, can be a valuable teaching tool when it comes to emotional development.
That’s not to say that teaching kids to handle disappointment is easy. Or that kids can simply work through disappointment on their own. With proper support and frequent discussions about coping with disappointment and overcoming obstacles, young children can learn how to handle life’s disappointments, big and small.

Try these tips to help your child learn to handle disappointments with ease.

  1. Empathize first.
  2. Be a guide, not a fixer.
  3. Help your child manage expectations.
  4. Practice delayed gratification.
  5. Teach self-calming skills.

It takes time to develop the skills to cope with disappointment. Be patient when your child has big reactions to seemingly small events. Sometimes a good venting helps kids work through their emotions so that they can think more rationally about the disappointing event and what they can do to recover.
