  • Congratulations to our Grade 2 students on their First Holy Communion! We extend our heartfelt thanks to the families and friends who joined us in celebrating this significant spiritual milestone. A special appreciation goes out to the dedicated Saint Timothy staff members who took the time to attend and offer their support to these students. Your presence and encouragement have truly made this occasion even more memorable for our students. Thank you for your unwavering support and for being a part of this special day in their lives.
Father Melvin delivered an inspiring message to families, emphasizing the importance of ongoing support for their children following the reception of the Body and Blood of Jesus during their First Holy Communion. He articulated the significance of helping children internalize this sacred experience, which marks the beginning of their spiritual journey. Families must continue nurturing and guiding their children as they grow in their faith, ensuring that this profound encounter with the divine becomes deeply ingrained in their memories and shapes their spiritual development. We are grateful for Father Melvin’s insightful guidance and encourage families to embrace their role in fostering their children’s ongoing spiritual growth.

Mental Health Awareness Week

Catholic Education Week comes at the same time as Mental Health Awareness. The theme this year is “Compassion Connects – A Call to Be Kind”. Our Catholic Social Teachings guide us to be kind and compassionate to one another. We know that compassion can make a positive impact on the lives of others. As we live in a world afflicted by suffering, we must display kindness to one another for everyone’s positive mental health and well-being. This year’s Mental Health Week is centered on the healing power of compassion and connection.
Throughout the week, we will be sharing resources and tips while encouraging our community to help support mental wellness.   We will also be doing some learning in our classes about the impact of stress on our brains, at age-appropriate levels to help students understand why it is so valuable to them to practice these skills. It is important to focus on how naming, expressing, and dealing with our emotions – the ones we like and the ones we don’t are important for our mental health.   For more information please visit Mental Health Week and our school board page WCDSB Mental Health and Well Being

Supporting the Walk To School and the Bus Stop – Bike and Scooter Rack Etiquette
Bike and scooter racks are great for keeping your ride safe all day while you are in class, but they can fill up quickly and be a little chaotic when everyone uses them at once. Please help us make sure there is enough space for everyone and no one gets hurt using the racks.

  • Place your bike or scooter neatly so all the spaces can be used.
  • Tall people use the highest slots on scooter towers, leaving low slots for little ones.
  • Keep bikes upright and straight so they don’t get damaged.
  • Don’t block others from accessing the rack.
  • Help smaller children when they are having trouble using the rack.

Promoting Health/Well-Being – How to Teach Your Child About Developmental Differences

Young children sometimes wonder aloud why someone on the playground or at the supermarket is in a wheelchair or looks or acts differently than they do. Parents often think it’s best to not call attention to differences between people. But children as young as toddlers notice and have questions, about whether or not we want them to.

When your child asks these questions, don’t dismiss it or quickly change the subject. That suggests they’ve brought up something shameful that shouldn’t be talked about. Instead, use the opportunity to provide empathetic, appropriate and accurate information about developmental differences. The details you share will be more useful than the ideas they may invent on their own or things they may hear from other kids. Through conversation, you can help your child understand we shouldn’t assume things about others, and we should recognize that people with developmental differences are individuals rather than part of a group. Your words will help to shape your child’s opinions and future interactions with people who are different than them. Spring into Spring: Active transport to and from school is a GREAT way to celebrate Earth Week. Walk, roll, or ride to school to help reduce greenhouse gases, improve your health, and lessen traffic around our school. We know that active transportation has many benefits including:
– improved physical and mental health,
– mental focus,
– environmental well-being, and
– graduated independence

We are strongly encouraging families to walk with their children whenever possible and/ or work with neighbours to create a walking school bus. If you cannot accompany your child to/ from home, please make sure you review road safety rules with them, such as, staying on the sidewalk, not run across the road, and always look both ways before crossing a street. It is also important for children to be respectful citizens on their way to and from home. This includes staying off private property and sharing sidewalks with other community members. Thank you for continuing to check in with your children about these important life lessons.

Earth Week

As we enter Earth Week, we will work to change the narrative from “I” to “We”, focusing on how we as a community can make our Earth sustainable for everyone. This requires us to sacrifice convenience. We can make simple choices to do our part: bring a reusable water bottle to school, stop the use of single-use plastics, reduce, reuse and recycle, walk or ride when you can and reduce water consumption. We look forward to using this week to remind students of our commitment as Catholics to stewardship of this earth we share.

The International theme this year is Planet vs. Plastic. “For Earth Day 2024 on April 22nd, EARTHDAY.ORG is unwavering in our commitment to end plastics for the sake of human and planetary health, demanding a 60% reduction in the production of ALL plastics by 2040.” To learn more about this initiative, visit Earthday.org and the United NationsVisit Earthday.ca to discover other activities and initiatives and learn about Canada’s Earth Day 2024 campaign, Earth Day is Leg Day. Check out specific activities to join and learn how you can combat gas emissions in Canada and help save the planet!

Student Class Placement – September 2024

Although it is only April, preparations are now being made to ensure that our school is organized for the 2024-2025 school year.  As such, in the coming months,teachers will be organizing student class placements.  As you can appreciate, many hours of meetings and consultations go into the class-building process to ensure the appropriate placement of all students.  When building a class, teachers look at the following criteria;

  • Balance of ability – academic skills
  • Balance according to gender
  • Learning style – how the learner learns
  • Teaching style – how the teacher teaches
  • Social blending – who gets along with whom
  • Parental input – re: learning style of the student

Please note, that parental input is important to us and is weighed with other criteria.  Specific teacher requests cannot be considered.  Rather, if necessary, parental input, in the form of a letter/email to the Principal, Mr. Simoes, should focus on the learning style of the student and the type of environment the student best learns in.  Letters/emails should be submitted to Mr. Simoes by Wednesday, May 1st  Please remember that many discussions and reflections are put into the class-building process.  We will have approximately 370 students this September and we do our very best to develop classes that will be formed in order to maximize opportunities for each child to learn and be successful! Your trust in our professional judgment is greatly appreciated.

Promoting Health/Well-Being – Noticing Mental Health Concerns For Your Child

Emotional and behavioural difficulties can arise at any time and can affect anyone. It is important to consider signs that could indicate that your child is struggling with an emerging or escalating mental health problem. Identifying problems early, and providing caring support, goes a long way toward prevention and/or worsening of difficulties.

God, Creator of All, we offer our prayer in gratitude and humility that we might heed your call to care for one another through our care of the least, the lowest and the most vulnerable of all your blessed creation. Grant us the courage to speak on behalf of the soft soil under our feet, the running and still waters, the warmth of the sun on our faces, and all the crawling, flying and swimming creatures you love. May our courage to speak translate into actions that protect our planet – so we might enjoy the fruits of what we sow.

We hope that parents will take the time to watch this talk with their children; it is well worth your time and should benefit your child and even your family relationships. Student Class Placement – September 2024

Although it is only April, preparations are now being made to ensure that our school is organized for the 2024-2025 school year.  As such, in the coming months, teachers will be organizing student class placements.  As you can appreciate, many hours of meetings and consultations go into the class-building process to ensure the appropriate placement of all students.  When building a class, teachers look at the following criteria;

We will have approximately 370 students this September and we do our very best to develop classes that will be formed to maximize opportunities for each child to learn and be successful! Your trust in our professional judgment is greatly appreciated.

The Easter Season

The Easter Season of the Liturgical Calendar this year is April 1, 2024, through May 19, 2024.

What is Easter Sunday and how does it differ from the Easter Season?
Easter Sunday is the day when Catholics celebrate Christ’s resurrection from the dead. The Easter Season totals 50 days – Easter Sunday to Pentecost Sunday. The Easter Season is a time for reflection on and deepening of our awareness of the mysteries prepared for in Lent and celebrated at the Triduum. During the Easter season the Paschal Candle, a symbol of the presence of the Risen Christ among the people of God, remains in the sanctuary until Pentecost Sunday. The Easter Season is represented by the liturgical colour white — the colour of light, a symbol of joy, purity and innocence.

What is Pentecost?
Pentecost is celebrated 50 days after Easter Sunday. It is the Christian feast commemorating the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the Apostles, which marked the start of the church’s mission on earth.

Promoting Health/Well-Being – Helping Kids Build Inclusive Friendships

Positive relationships with peers can help boost kids’ self-esteem and happiness levels. They may also lower the risk of depression and anxiety. Children who are more open to others tend to become kinder, more empathetic people. Additionally, childhood relationships affect the quality of friendships later in life, as well as romantic and work relationships.

All children have a unique set of strengths and differences. Some children may talk or interact in different ways than your child. This could be caused by many factors, including:
Cultural background, Family values or Symptoms of autism, ADHD or learning differences

Giving children opportunities to spend time with others who are different from them can build new experiences, perspectives and friendships. It also helps children build the skills needed to interact successfully with a diverse population.

How Do I Talk to My Child About Social Differences?
Explain to your child that not everybody communicates or plays in the same way. For example, some children may not look at you when they talk. Some may prefer to play with just one toy for an extended time. These differences do not make someone a bad friend. Learning about these differences can help children become more inclusive.

How Can I Make Playdates More Inclusive?
Try these five ideas to make your child’s playdates more inclusive to children with a diverse set of needs:

  1. Do your research. Talk to the parent/guardian to find a few activities their child enjoys. Try to find at least two or three interests they have in common with your child, whether it’s playing Legos, making crafts, riding bikes or something else. Ask the other parent if there is anything specific that helps social gatherings go smoothly for their child.
  2. Plan ahead. Map out simple activities for the children to keep them busy. Don’t leave much unstructured time when they’re together for the first time. Prepare for a snack break in case the kids get tired of what they’re doing and need to shift gears. Be sure to check with the child’s parent/guardian about any dietary restrictions.
  3. Consider your environment. Many children benefit from an environment that is not too loud, bright or crowded. For example, if a child is easily overwhelmed in crowded settings, it may be better to play at home rather than go to the park. Again, talk to the family to see what is most helpful for their child.
  4. Invite the parent/caregiver. Ask the parent or caregiver to stay for the playdate. The two of you can chat while keeping an eye on the kids, and they can help support their child if needed.
  5. End on a high note. All children need breaks, and some children may only be able to play for an hour or two at a time. Be sure to end the playdate while both children are still having fun.

As a parent, having a child with an autism spectrum disorder brings some unique challenges in everyday life. The more we talk about autism and bring awareness to it, the more it helps us learn how to interact with these children and become advocates. The more we know, the more we can advocate.-  https://www.onoursleeves.org/mental-health-resources/articles-support/relationships/inclusive-friendships
