Saint Timothy Newswire: Weekly Update May 27th to 31st

“Let us learn from the strong and helpful faith of our Mother Mary in order to become living signs of God’s mercy.” – Pope Francis

It’s the last week of May! We are heading into the homestretch of the school year and we will continue to have many opportunities to grow and learn together over the next few weeks. We are called to meet and accompany our students and families in their journey. We do this through the creation and promotion of a school environment that reflects the reality of the Church as a community that nurtures human dignity and is dedicated to both spiritual and human development for all. What a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the uniqueness of every individual that we welcome into our community.

Please refer to events, information, and reminders below.

Thank you …

  • This Friday, WCDSB is proud to acknowledge Educational Assistants and Child Youth Care Workers Day. This day is devoted to appreciating, celebrating and honouring the daily impact they make on student success.  Please join us in celebrating EA/CYCW Appreciation Day by letting our team, here at Saint Timothy know how important they are to us.
  • to our Cross-Country Team who will have the opportunity to participate in WCDSB’s Cross Country Meet on Wednesday, June 5th.  A big shout out to the coaches for all their time and commitment to our students. Enjoy the run.
  • to our student-athletes as they prepare for our AA Track and Field Meet on June 11th at Resurrection High School. Thank you to our coaches for all your support and time.
  • our School Council for recognizing Thursday, May 30th as Staff Appreciation Day.  Your acknowledgement of our hard work and dedication is deeply appreciated and means a great deal to all of us.
  • to all our students who are sharing their gifts, talents and leadership skills to make our school a better environment for learning. We know you will continue this trend in June! Lastly, thank you to all of our parents and guardians for offering your support and appreciation for the good work we are doing at the school. It means so much to our staff, and most importantly, to our students. I am very much looking forward to the final month of the year and treasuring every moment of the privilege to serve the Saint Timothy Catholic School Community.

School Highlights

  • Please click on the link for this week’s St. Aloysius Catholic Church bulletin – HERE
  • June is designated as Pride Month in Canada, and on Saturday, June 1st, we will join other schools across our district in raising the Pride (Rainbow) flag outside of our school building. The Rainbow flag will fly for June as a visible symbol of our commitment to nurturing a safe, welcoming, and inclusive learning environment where every student and every member of the community is valued, and respected.
  • Indigenous History Month: June is National Indigenous History Month in Canada, with special recognition dedicated to National Indigenous Peoples Day, which falls on June 21st. On this day and throughout June, we celebrate the First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples, their vibrant and distinct cultures, and their beautiful languages. This is an opportunity for Canadians to learn about the history of Indigenous Peoples, and further embrace the opportunity to learn more about their identities. For our classrooms, students will be learning about Indigenous perspectives on treaties, Indigenous leadership, resistance, resurgence, brilliance, and creativity.
  • Our Grade 6 students will begin writing the EQAO assessment this week (parents already received more detailed communication regarding the assessment). The types of questions included in the EQAO e-assessment will be familiar to our students as they are based on the work they have been doing throughout the year. Sample assessments are available on the EQAO website for Grade 3 students and Grade 6 students. The EQAO assessment results help us to continue to improve upon the quality of Catholic education offered to your children. For more information please visit here. We wish our students all the best as they show what they know!
Tips to Help Your Child –
Maintain a Positive Attitude: Encourage a positive outlook towards the tests. Avoid putting too much pressure on your child, as this can lead to anxiety.
Ensure Rest and Nutrition: Ensure your child gets enough sleep and eats a healthy breakfast on the days of the test. Physical well-being can significantly impact performance
  • Celebration of Cultures: Thursday, June 13th – We look forward to celebrating the rich tapestry of the Saint Timothy community. The day will feature gallery walks where displays are prepared by students to learn about their cultures.  There will also be food of different cultures so we can taste the delights from many places across the globe. We are looking forward to hosting this event.
  • Please see the attached poster from the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. We will be teaming up with them to support those in need in other countries.  This is a wonderful opportunity for us to make a positive impact.  All items can be dropped off at school until June 14th.  Thank you for your generosity and kindness.    Pencil Case 2024
  • Bike to School Week June 3rd to 7th: You can also register your child using the following link and win some cool prizes – ly/BTSW2024  Register today and keep biking to school!

Important Reminders

  • A reminder that Friday, May 31st is a PA Day for Report Card Writing. There is no school for students on this day.
  • National Accessibility Week is an opportunity to celebrate the valuable contributions of Canadians with disabilities. During this week, we also recognize the efforts of individuals, communities and workplaces that work to remove barriers to accessibility and inclusion.
  • Parents we ask that you continue to check closets, trunks, under beds, etc. for any schoolbooks and Chromebooks that may be hiding and return them to us as soon as possible. The more we receive back, the fewer we have to replace.  By working together to locate missing textbooks and library books, we are able to responsibly minimize costs to the school.  All library books are due back Friday, June 7th so that we can conduct an inventory.
  • Welcome To Kindergarten: If you are a parent of a newly registered Junior Kindergarten student, we hope you are getting VERY excited to start at Saint Timothy in September! As the end of the school year approaches, we know that you may have many questions as to what September will look like.  We would like to invite you all – families of new JK students registered in September – to our annual “Welcome to Kindergarten Night”.  We will all have a chance to talk about expectations, let you know what to expect, tour a kindergarten classroom, and see some areas of the building.  It is always a wonderful night where you can meet future classmates, see your teachers, and get any questions you may have, answered. Please join us in the school Learning Commons on Thursday, May 30th, 2024 at 6:00 pm.  We will gather together in prayer and then begin exploring! We look forward to seeing you there!  Welcome to the TIGERS Community!
  • Later this week, we welcome Inuk Knowledge Keeper Darlene Schaffer who will be teaching students about Inuit history and Inuit in the present day.

WCDSB Updates

Please visit our School Board Website for updates and recent information.  Here is the link: http://www.wcdsb.ca

Learning At Home: The most important things that parents can do to support their children’s reading and writing, from birth onwards, are to share lots and lots of books and stories with their child and to always make book-sharing an enjoyable experience.

Math Survey:  Schools offer a variety of opportunities for parents to learn more about how to support their children: for example, events related to mathematics may be held at the school (e.g., family math nights); teachers may provide newsletters or communicate with parents through apps or social media; and school or board websites may provide helpful tips about how parents can engage in their child’s mathematics learning outside of school and may even provide links where they can learn more or enjoy math activities together.
The following brief survey will assist our school district in gathering data about how parents/families feel in terms of being informed about what their children are learning in math, how parents/families feel about supporting their children’s learning in math, and about parental access to math learning resources at home.
Thank you in advance for your consideration and participation.
→ https://bit.ly/SupportingMathAtHomeSurvey2024  This survey will remain open until June 14, 2024.  If you have any questions or concerns regarding the collection of this information please contact K-12 Mathematics Coordinator, Board Math Lead, Petra LeDuc at petra.leduc@wcdsb.ca , 519-578-3660 extension 2415.

PD Day Camps:  PD day and summer programming is being offered to children aged 5-12 in collaboration with Laurier’s Psychology and Kinesiology Departments.
On the May 31st PD Day, we are hosting Science Discovery Day, held at the Laurier Science Building. From 9 am to 4 pm, young scientists will dive into research experiences, exploring the wonders of the brain and body. They’ll enjoy psychology labs, a science-themed scavenger hunt, workshops, and engaging with peers. There are few spots left—register now to secure your spot!
Looking ahead to summer, don’t miss our BrainWorx Summer Experience—a week-long adventure held at Laurier. BrainWorx attendees will enjoy science workshops, a juggling class, and research experiences, all while having fun with sports, and crafts, and making new friends.
Posters for both BrainWorx programs are attached and contain further information. If you have any questions or would like to register, please email Sydney Austin, BrainWorx Laurier Coordinator, at brainworxlaurier@gmail.com.

Promoting Health/Well-Being:   Growing our Gratitude

Gratitude is the act of showing appreciation and being thankful.  Research shows that people who practice gratitude – who think about the good things in their life – are healthier and happier!

Gratitude helps:

  • Improve social connections and relationships
  • Protect from stress and increases resilience
  • Boost energy levels
  • Increase self-esteem
  • Adds a sense of meaning

 Before Teaching Gratitude

  • Start by explaining that there is physical health and mental health.
    • For example, you might say something like: “When your throat hurts or you break a bone, you go to the doctor. Our throat and bones are part of our physical health. We do things to stay physically healthy, like eating foods that are good for us. Can you think of other things that help us stay physically healthy?”
    • Children may have ideas like exercising, brushing teeth, wearing sunscreen, etc.
  • Follow up with that while we may feel physically well one day, we might have an ache or pain or sore throat another day.
  • Explain to them that the same thing happens with our thoughts and feelings. Our thoughts and feelings make up our mental health.
    • Ask your child about times when they feel excited and happy and times when they may feel sad or confused. Be sure to share your own examples.

Remember that all feelings – excited, worried, happy, scared, unsure – are okay. One way to promote our mental health can be to remember what we are grateful for. https://www.onoursleeves.org/mental-wellness-tools-guides/helping-kids-stay-positive/gratitude-in-kids

Saint Timothy Newswire: Weekly Update May 20th to 24th

“Our Mother is full of beauty because she is full of grace.” –  Pope Francis

The beautiful weather is finally upon us and it makes us mindful of the beauty of this season. Take time to smell the flowers and hear the birds…enjoy the sunny days and the rainy ones too.

Please refer to events, information, and reminders below.

Thank you …

  • to all of our staff members who take on extra responsibilities and jump in and help so that these opportunities can happen! We are so blessed to be a part of such a collaborative community!
  • I am thrilled to witness the vibrant tapestry of diversity that permeates our school. From prayers spoken in various languages to the empowering materials and resources in our building, we cherish, respect, and celebrate the multitude of traditions, backgrounds, and lived experiences within our community. It’s through embracing this diversity that we cultivate understanding, empathy, and unity. As we must constantly remind ourselves, “We are called to love.” Thank you for entrusting us with the education and nurturing of your children. Together, let us continue to foster an environment where faith, success, and diversity thrive harmoniously.
  • Mr. Carvalho, Mrs. Matesa and the Intermediate soccer team for representing us so well at the St. Mary Family of Schools Soccer Tournament. Our team played well and demonstrated wonderful teamwork. Thank you also to our parents who either drove and/or cheered on our Intermediate soccer team.
  • to all parents and volunteers who came out to Saint Benedict Catholic Secondary School for our Track and Field event. Our students enjoyed the competition and the spirit of the day! A huge shout-out for taking this tremendous event goes out to Mrs. Barbosa and Mme Piotrowski. Alongside them, the rest of our staff who all trained our students and facilitated the races/events, supervised, and cheered our students. Thank you all so much for giving this gift of Track and Field to our students once again.
  • to our parents and families for sending your child prepared for the summer-like weather! Please ensure that your child has a reusable water bottle, a hat and sunscreen!
  • to our 2023-2024 School Council Advisory who met many times over the school year to support our children and provide events and opportunities outside the classroom walls.  A more fulsome report will be forthcoming.  Thank you, council, for your commitment to your student’s academic, spiritual and social growth this year!  Thank you to Ana Logos Suazo, Bev Davis, Bev Rodgers, Colleen Taylor, Kavita Kore, Mrs. Skopec, Holly Herteis, Mrs. Oliveria, Tanya Kruger, Siju Ogunlesi and Yvette Thorne.
We are always looking for new members. Please consider joining our council next school year.
  • for your overwhelming support and generosity with our recent fundraiser – big bags of popcorn and chips. We are deeply grateful for your enthusiastic participation.

School Highlights

  • Please click on the link for this week’s St. Aloysius Catholic Church bulletin – HERE
  • Family Carnival – Please mark your calendars Wednesday, June 19th 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Please consider donating raffle prizes and guessing jars.  Any fundraising donation items ranging from gift cards to merchandise would be much appreciated. For guessing jars, bring into school a jar or container filled with whatever – candies, jelly beans, legos, etc. The only caveat is you have to count them.  Please put a small piece of paper or sticky inside the lid with the total number on it and bring it to school.   If you have any questions or need additional information about these fundraising requests, please contact Yvette Thorne at thorne@wcdsb.ca.  We hope to see our many families and friends here to enjoy another wonderful community event.
Ticket information will be available soon through School Cash Online.  We will have inflatables, carnival games, face painting, food trucks and so much more.  If you are interested in volunteering please also contact yvette.thorne@wcdsb.ca
  • Now that the warm weather has arrived, many more students are riding their bikes to school. Please remind your child(ren) that they need to walk their bikes while on school property. It is also important that you review bicycle safety rules with your child(ren) to ensure that they are safe while riding their bikes to school.
  • A reminder that we have many children in our school with severe life-threatening food allergies to peanuts and nuts (anaphylaxis).  This is a medical condition that causes a severe reaction to specific foods and can result in death. Although this may or may not affect your child’s class directly, we request that you choose to send foods with your child to school that are free from peanuts or nut products.  The children are informed not to share their snacks/lunch with other children and students who go out for lunch, cannot bring back any lunch/candy purchased to share and consume at school.
  • Celebration of Cultures: Thursday, June 13th – We look forward to celebrating the rich tapestry of the Saint Timothy community. The day will feature gallery walks where displays are prepared by students to learn about their cultures.  There will also be food from different cultures so we can taste the delights from many places across the globe. We are looking forward to hosting this event.
  • Today is Pentecost Sunday. Jesus breathes the Holy Spirit into the disciples and by doing so he re-creates them. The life-giving breath poured forth at the dawn of creation is now the Spirit-breath, the very indwelling of God. Only because of this divine indwelling do we have the power to forgive and thus continue Jesus’ saving mission. We are the incarnation of the risen Lord in our world today. We are re-created by the Holy Spirit. The sign of re-creation is forgiveness.

Saint Timothy Newswire: Weekly Update May 13th to 17th

“The loveliest masterpiece of the heart of God is the heart of a mother.” – St. Therésè of Lisieux

As we close another enriching Catholic Education Week, I am filled with immense pride and gratitude for the extraordinary displays of creativity, faith, and unity that our students and staff have showcased. This past week, we were blessed to witness our students leading a beautifully conducted virtual liturgy. Their poise and reverence brought the spirit of prayer into each of our classes, reminding us of the strength and serenity that comes from collective worship. The creativity continued with our folk dance performance. Both students and staff shone brightly, demonstrating not only their artistic talents but also their ability to collaborate and support one another in bringing joy and entertainment to our community. It was a performance that surely lifted our spirits! Furthermore, our school council led our STEM Night this past Thursday.  What an amazing turnout it was as families participated in amazing activities. Thank you to our School Council for organizing and hosting the event.

Our “Journey with Jesus” walk was yet another moment where our students demonstrated their deep faith and commitment. This reflective journey brought us together in fellowship and reminded us of the spiritual path that we are all walking together. Looking ahead, we are excited to continue celebrating the many gifts that make our community thrive. Each student, each family, and each story contributes to the vibrant tapestry of our school. Together, we create an environment where learning, faith and creativity flourish. Thank you for your continued support and participation in our school’s journey. Let us carry forward the spirit of this week, cherishing and nurturing the gifts of every member of our community. A special shout-out to our Mother’s this weekend. We are Blessed to have so many Mothers in our lives. Wishing you all a wonderful and restful weekend.

Happy Mother’s Day!!!!!!

Please refer to events, information, and reminders below.

Thank you …

  • our Folk Dancers have wrapped up their season with their final showcase. Excellent job and thank you to Mrs. Coughlan, Ms. Garvey and Mrs. Presslee for months of practicing!
  • to our Pastoral Team for organizing our Journey with Jesus liturgy and walk this past Friday recognizing the theme We are called to love / Appelés à aimer!
  • to all of the parents, grandparents and family members who were able to join us last week for Catholic Education Week. We are so grateful for our home-school-parish partnership as we work together to support all of our students in their academic and faith journeys. Catholic Education continues to be a blessing and privilege in Ontario, and here at Saint Timothy Catholic Elementary School we are grateful to be able to pray, learn and play together in light of Jesus’ teachings and our gospel values. We will continue to live out our calling to love – as people of hope, as people of faith, as people of mercy, as people of justice, and as people of joy.
  • to our students who we celebrated for making strides in April to be a “Global Citizenship and Sustainability.” Thank you for sharing your gifts and talents with our community!
  • to our parents and families for your support with our popcorn sales. Courtesy of our school council, many of our students are enjoying a healthy and delicious snack every Friday. Furthermore, thank you to Mrs. Presslee and our intermediate student volunteers for the organization and delivery of popcorn every Friday.
  • to our incredible Education Assistant and Early Childhood Team for your support and love of our students!

School Highlights

  • Please click on the link for this week’s St. Aloysius Catholic Church bulletin – HERE
  • Please consider donating raffle prizes for our Family Carnival on Wednesday, June 19th.   Any fundraising donation items ranging from gift cards to merchandise would be much appreciated.  If you have any questions or need additional information about the fundraising request, please contact Yvette Thorne at thorne@wcdsb.ca
  • With spring weather upon us, we are noticing some children coming to school wearing crocs and slides. We want to remind everyone about the importance of safe footwear for all students. Both in the school and outside at recess, crocs, sandals, slides and flip-flops are not safe shoes for students to be wearing. For the safety of everyone, we need your support and assistance in ensuring that your child is coming to school with closed-toe and closed-heeled shoes.
  • Now that the weather is nice, many parents who are home during the school day are enjoying the mid-day sun for a neighbourhood walk. As you enjoy the sunshine, please avoid coming onto the school property during your walk as you are a stranger to other children. Our Saint Timothy teacher supervisors will be approaching any adults on the yard during outdoor play times to give them a reminder to stay on the paths outside/off school property.  Please share this message with any extended family and neighbours as well so that everyone in our neighbourhood can work to help keep the children safe at school.
  • Good luck this week to our Intermediate soccer team, participating in the St. Mary Family of Schools Tournament at Budd Park. A big thank you goes out to Mrs. Matesa and Mr. Carvalho for all their work in getting everyone ready!
  • Congratulations to Lucas Conte on being recognized as the WCDSB Saint Timothy Beacons of Hope award winner. Your dedication, kindness and unwavering spirit uplift us all: https://twitter.com/i/status/1787537443211678113

School boards do not wait until the last week of summer to begin the staffing process. Thank you for spreading the word about online registration for 2024-25!

School Track and Field: Monday, May 13th

Our Track and Field meet is on for our Grade 4 to 8 students tomorrow.  The weather forecast looks promising with only a chance of a shower in the early morning. Students are reminded to come prepared for the weather, dressed warmly in the morning for sure and prepared for sun or light rain. Sunscreen and lots of water are strongly recommended.   Our students have been practicing the various events over the past month.  Ask your child which events they have signed up for.  Please refer to this letter for more information: St. Timothy School Track and Field Meet

After regular morning attendance at 9:00 a.m., students will then take buses to Saint Benedict Secondary Catholic High School in Cambridge.  We will be returning to Saint Timothy around 2:00 p.m.  Please note your child(ren) is to return to school with their class unless you are present to sign them out.  They may not leave on their own from the track or with another family.

We are also kindly reminding everyone that we are guests of Saint Benedict.  We know that our Tigers students will show good sportsmanship, a positive mindset, and respectful behaviour. We are so excited for our annual Track and Field meet and look forward to a great day!

A Blessing for Mothers
Lord, thank you for the gift of our mothers.
Thank you for her love and care for us,
for her sacrifices for us, and for all she does for us.
I ask that you bless her abundantly.
May You grant her strength of mind and body,
peace of heart and mind,
and a faith that is strong and unyielding.
Please help her to grow in strength of body, mind, and spirit,
and to grow in wisdom and grace as the years go by.
May you protect and watch over her always and keep her safe from harm.
May she grow more in love with You each day that passes

Amen.
